CLUSTERWIDE PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS

"Engaging learners with texts means placing the use and creation of texts at the heart of literacy learning. Effective practice involves using and creating rich texts. These relate to children’s interests, draw on and affirm their social and cultural identities, use authentic language, and motivate and challenge them as learners". (English Online)

Over the past two weeks we've taken part in clusterwide student, and teacher , digital photography workshops.
To help students learn:
• to work collaboratively to complete a set task
• that photography is deliberate and planned – each image is built to tell a story and evoke a reaction
• to reflect on the degree of achievement of the task and guide further learning progression by using a SOLO based rubric and PMI.

To help teachers learn:
  • to use available school cameras as a tool to facilitate the identification, formation and expression of ideas, and the creation of rich texts by students.

Please either post a message in the Discussion Tab Above or have a go at a short message post below (add a sticky) to provide examples of your classroom practice.

Resources
We used a variety of themes to motivate students to focus on developing their collection of images and ideas, and used
MS Photostory 3 to present their work. This free software allows students to add appropriate text, voice and music to their 'text'.
A selection of excellent lesson planning, learning progressions and teaching resources are also available in English Online eg. "Telling a Story with Photography"

Expectations

Teachers attended after school sessions (Junior, Middle and Senior) to (a) Experience the same learning process as their students, (b)Discuss possible classroom applications and (c) Explore available resources .
It is intended that teachers will use:
1. Information and new learning gathered at the workshop, combined with...
2. The classroom resources provided and links to online sites eg. English Online & TKI,
3. Student experience/expertise from those students who attended the day sessions
4. Support from the school parent/helper who assisted each student group,
...to begin using available school cameras as a tool to facilitate the identification, formation and expression of ideas and the creation of rich texts by students in classroom practice.
